Aus | Indian taxi driver attacked
A 25-year-old Indian taxi driver was assaulted in Melbourne by two passengers. One of them was a woman.
Police have sought help from witnesses in tracing the passengers who attacked driver Satish Kumar on Saturday. CCTV images of the passengers have been released.
Kumar was treated for facial injuries at the Northern Hospital after the late night assault. The incident was sparked by his refusal to carry more passengers than was legally allowed.
Kumar told Headlines Today on the phone that the attack was racially motivated. He said he was satisfied with the police action so far.
Meanwhile, Australia’s former army chief General Peter Cosgrove has said the attacks against Indians were racially motivated.
Cosgrove told Australian newspaper The Age that the attacks on Indians were a “major problem”.
Raising serious concerns over the attitude of the Australian government, Cosgrove said | “Attacks recently by groups of people on individuals look like a profiling approach to people from the sub-continent. If you didn’t suspect a racial strand you’d be mad.”
